Far Off Giggles

My home office is a vigorous stone’s throw away from the campus my children went to for their primary years. Even in the cacophony of little voices I used to make out their laughter from my window facing west. Now that they’ve moved on to bigger challenges my ears can’t detect them.
It’s sill nice to hear the occasional booming sounds of little people coming from down the street it just doesn’t have that last bit of twang that made it all the sweeter.

Mom’s Kiss

On occasion I give my kin a peck before they go to bed. Last evening as I did this and turned off their bedroom light a thought pierced my heart. I cannot remember the last time my mother kissed me goodnight or goodbye. She has been away so long that I’ve forgotten her embrace. Surely by now her pace has gotten a little slower and she’s shrunk a noticeable millimeter or two then when we were last in the same Country together.
I chuckled at the thought of a 42 year old missing his mama. It was a front though to myself because if I could have a hug or a kiss right now I’d gladly take it.

Girl on Fire

It’s not easy to hit the high note but she still tries. From the backseat she fills up her lungs and becomes a one performer choir. The chorus comes and with full confidence pronounces, “this girl is on fire!” He voice breaks at the top of the line but she’s unperturbed and I stay quiet and amused.
Then I remember how I too enjoyed singing in the car but I did not have the confidence to do it with anyone around. I sang in my room with the doors closed or in my car with the windows up.
I live vicariously through her and enjoy the concert.

Podcast: Listen Closely – Everyone is talking but are we listening to one another?

While cleaning out his garage Hugo found an old poem his High School teacher assigned in the last days of Senior year. It made little sense to him then but twenty years later he’s lived a life and the puzzle pieces are starting to make sense. Hugo reads the poem and shares his thoughts on the importance of listening to the wisdom of elders and why we need to truly listen to each other more.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
