Lord of the Flies

Lost in a sea of books I tried my very best to guide my boy about the aisles of this massive story. We have such different ideas of what is a worthwhile read and for a moment I thought we reached an impasse. But then I had him read the back cover of the Lord of the Flies and when he was done he beamed with excitement.
Good choice my boy…good choice.

Child’s Play

I watch my kids play in the park.

They approach tiny-strangers without worry of a reproach. In their innocence they make fast friends of the foreigners and in minutes share uninhibited belly-laughs.
They run, giggle, throw sand and climb. This impromptu group of new and temporary pals create a society all their own with simple rules.
Hurt feelings are literal. Bruised knees, a bump on the head or an accidental bump on the nose. Apologies are quick to come and even quicker to be accepted. Time dwelling only takes away from precious moments better spent on the games.
I wonder why I monitor them so much.
As if my adult sense of society could somehow improve their careless kid paradise.
