Da Man

Where I grew up we believed in “Da Man.”

A shawdowy figured that made, enforced and bent the rules.

When times were bad we blamed “Da Man”.

When times were good we figured he was on vacation.

He was the Alpha and the Omega.

We cursed his invisible hand.

But like the “Chupacabras”, “Boogie Man” and “Sandy Claws” I’ve long since learned that he may not exist.

Or even worse…maybe…..

I

Well maybe I have become….

“Da Man”.

Character

Would he have considered his dream realized?

I believe that despite some hold outs, we do live in a nation where we are not judged by the color of our skin.

But what happened to the content of our character?

As a whole, are we the type of society where individual character is celebrated? Do we truly understand the gravity and consequence of the words we use?

In so many ways we’ve made progress. We’ve also taken many steps back.

What would he have thought of America today? A dream realized? A dream squandered? A dream in process?

I have no answers…just questions today.
