Podcast: Coveting Grapes – We want what others have but it doesn’t make us happy. What might?

From the moment we are born we begin to model the behaviors of others and shape our desires based on what others have. If we allow ourselves to covet too much the stuff of others we risk the chance of losing ourselves on unhappy pursuits. Hugo discusses the times he’s been led astray and the steps he has taken to keep his unhealthy wants at bay.

Podcast: Listen Closely – Everyone is talking but are we listening to one another?

While cleaning out his garage Hugo found an old poem his High School teacher assigned in the last days of Senior year. It made little sense to him then but twenty years later he’s lived a life and the puzzle pieces are starting to make sense. Hugo reads the poem and shares his thoughts on the importance of listening to the wisdom of elders and why we need to truly listen to each other more.
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

The Fastest Torres

Heading east and 37 feet past the dogie water fountain on the Royal Oaks trail a boy ran by a middle aged man. Huffing and puffing the stocky forty-something thought he could and thought he could catch up with the gazelle like kiddo to no avail.
It could have been the extra 10 pounds, the aching knees, the mid-day heat or the heart palpitations that kept him from matching strides. In any case the baton has officially been passed and a new

Avengers Assembled

  • Iron Man: A most flawed character and yet the one I identify with the most. From the alcohol, the deflection with humor, the PTSD, and the cocky genius.
  • Captain America: Stoic to the point of hard headed. The uncompromising person whose ideals I wish I could live up to but my pragmatism won’t let me be.
  • Thor: The spoiled kid who had to be taken down a few pegs. I’ve known this kid but I wasn’t friends with this kid. Funny though!
  • Black Widow: The girl that never got her due in school even though she was the best person in the bunch. You could always count on her and I eventually would date and marry her.
  • Hulk: My ID in my early 20s. Raging with anger, self-loathing, testosterone, libido and devil-may care attitude. It would take two decades to tame this beast.
  • Hawkeye: The best friend you took for granted because you knew his big old heart could take it.
  • Nick Fury: The bosses that pushed you and sometimes broke you.
  • Ant Man: He’s Paul Rudd man! I mean…he’s just Paul Rudd.
  • Star Lord: Man-child. Mostly all the guys I pledged and was in a fraternity with.
  • Black Panther: The contemplative leader. The man who thinks about the wake his actions may create.
  • Doctor Strange: The no-nonsense engineer. Willing to do the research that I won’t do.
  • War Machine: That friend who will call you out on your BS but will always have your back.
  • Winter Soldier: That guy in HS that you were tight with but lost touch after graduation. Then you met up again on FB and picked up the foolishness many years after you were kids.
  • Okoye: The one in the office who knows her worth and makes no qualms who knows it. A proactive ally and a formidable foe.
  • Captain Marvel: The girl in the yearbook who was chosen most likely to succeed and she did and then some.
